{"id":664,"date":"2014-03-11T17:42:57","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T17:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thisplot.com\/TheNewThing\/?p=664"},"modified":"2014-03-12T17:43:33","modified_gmt":"2014-03-12T17:43:33","slug":"first-day-of-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thisplot.com\/TheNewThing\/2014\/03\/11\/first-day-of-class\/","title":{"rendered":"First day of class"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah (?), first day of class for my English Teaching Methods class, now required by the State of California to get an English credential.\u00a0 This would also be my first online class experience.<\/p>\n<p>I initially found the website disorienting \u2013 things were not always intuitive.\u00a0 Still, after an hour or so, I was able to navigate just fine.\u00a0 One thing that struck me immediately was that the direct teacher instruction was completely missing.\u00a0 The teacher in an online class is part facilitator and part administrator and the students basically teach each other as they read through the week\u2019s lessons and assignments.\u00a0 My particular Phoenix online class has nine students, including me, and I\u2019m the only male in the group.\u00a0 Of the four who showed up on the first day of class, like me, three of us are either well into our career, or transitioning from one career to another \u2013 in other words, around 45-55 years old.\u00a0 Only one had ever taken an online class before so most of us were lost.<\/p>\n<p>I started to plow through the week\u2019s activities and I believe I finished around 60% after 10 hours online.\u00a0 I think I was probably supposed to spend less time online, as I am required to be online four days out of seven.\u00a0 Oh well, I\u2019m new at this.\u00a0 I also found out that the teacher\/facilitator monitors this website by day, but then goes and teaches a class at night, so this really isn\u2019t a night class, at least not if you want immediate feedback.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yeah (?), first day of class for my English Teaching Methods class, now required by the State of California to get an English credential.\u00a0 This would also be my first online class experience.
