{"id":559,"date":"2013-10-02T01:49:35","date_gmt":"2013-10-02T01:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thisplot.com\/TheNewThing\/?p=559"},"modified":"2013-11-13T00:28:25","modified_gmt":"2013-11-13T00:28:25","slug":"things-are-looking-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thisplot.com\/TheNewThing\/2013\/10\/02\/things-are-looking-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Things are looking up!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m not back to writing daily, but I really should because so much happens from day-to-day now that I\u2019m teaching every day.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday went fine with class \u2013 I even got compliments.\u00a0 Jeffrey had a nice 18<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.\u00a0 We went to Red Lobster\u2019s for dinner.<\/p>\n<p>Monday was a nice day.\u00a0 All the prep I had done last week really paid off.\u00a0 I\u2019m now a week ahead, including the photocopying of stuff.\u00a0 Truthfully, I can coast a little this week.<\/p>\n<p>Today started bad, but got better.\u00a0 My second period class told me that they hated the class (Freshmen English) and that they had been talking to the sixth period class (also Freshmen English) and they also hate the class and they think I\u2019m mean.\u00a0 Ouch.\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m trying, but the stuff I&#8217;m doing in English is very unexciting right now because I only have handouts.\u00a0 Also, the previous teacher didn\u2019t have many expectations for the class, and neither did the kids, so this sudden flurry of work and accountability has really stressed them out.\u00a0 As a result, I tried to make the day a little \u201clighter,\u201d but there\u2019s only so much you can do with a writing assignment.<\/p>\n<p>At lunch, I lamented to the department head how it sucks to be the mean guy who makes the students accountable for work they should have been doing all along.\u00a0 She said that she appreciated the work that I was doing and that the kids were already better off.\u00a0 In time, they may even thank me for actually teaching them something.\u00a0 I felt better.\u00a0 When I got out of the lunchroom to make the long trek back to my classroom, I ran into one of my favorite students from last year.\u00a0 She absolutely beamed when she saw me.\u00a0 She was having lunch with one of my sixth period students.\u00a0\u00a0 We talked for 10 minutes or so.\u00a0 As I was leaving, I overheard her telling her friend that I was her absolute favorite teacher in the world and that her friend was really lucky to have me as her teacher.\u00a0 That felt good too.\u00a0 As I walked along, I ran into maybe 10 students whom I had taught last year.\u00a0 They were all very happy to see me.\u00a0 Strange, it has been a week now, and this is the first day that this has happened.\u00a0 I saw it as God blessing me and reminding me that he put me here in the first place for a reason.\u00a0 I felt happy and blessed.\u00a0 The last two periods went just fine, and sixth period even seemed to enjoy the class.\u00a0 Things are looking up!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m not back to writing daily, but I really should because so much happens from day-to-day now that I\u2019m teaching every day.
