{"id":358,"date":"2013-02-02T00:24:17","date_gmt":"2013-02-02T00:24:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thisplot.com\/TheNewThing\/?p=358"},"modified":"2013-02-02T00:24:17","modified_gmt":"2013-02-02T00:24:17","slug":"the-week-in-review-week-4-module-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thisplot.com\/TheNewThing\/2013\/02\/02\/the-week-in-review-week-4-module-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The week in review: week 4, module 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since it was a four day week this week (Thursday was an in-service day), my master teacher and I agreed that I would teach three out of her five classes this week: 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 3<sup>rd<\/sup> (ELL) &amp; 4<sup>th<\/sup> (GATE), and two of her classes next week when we\u2019re back to a five day week.\u00a0 This will get me very close to \u201chalf time teaching,\u201d the requirement for this week and next.<\/p>\n<p>Next week, I\u2019ll teach 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 4<sup>th<\/sup> while my master teacher teaches 1<sup>st<\/sup>, 3<sup>rd<\/sup> &amp; 5<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>We started a new unit this week, one that will last two weeks.\u00a0 Monday and Tuesday were also the days that I was running my \u201cexperiment\u201d for TPA #2 (one of four California requirements for teachers).\u00a0 I had my two test subjects in period one, and I made their special assignments available to all the students for extra credit, but these two would be required to do the work (since my experiment was created specifically for them, they\u2019ll also get credit).\u00a0 On Monday, my supervisor also came to observe me during the ELL class, the hardest class to teach, since it\u2019s both a Social Studies and a Reading\/Writing class.\u00a0 I do not think I did well during my observation, but I also don\u2019t think the class suffered too much.\u00a0 I just need more skills in the area of ELL.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday and Wednesday went very well.\u00a0 I felt like I did alright.\u00a0 I also spent these two days trying my best to emulate (in fourth and fifth periods) any technique I saw my master teacher doing during second period (after I had completed teaching first period without observing her).\u00a0 In all cases, I think the later periods benefited.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday was a teacher in-service day, which I attended.\u00a0 The first half of the day was all about Common Core adoption.\u00a0 I learned a bit, and it was interesting to see what the experienced teachers thought about it.\u00a0 Most were overwhelmingly positive.\u00a0 My Social Studies group was less enthusiastic about it because there is no Common Core for Social Studies, other than the 10 items for Social Studies contained within Language Arts.\u00a0 The second half of the day was spent learning how to operate the Chromebooks the school had recently purchased.\u00a0 Once you get to know how they work, these Chromebooks are pretty useful\u2026 if you can find a way to give up Microsoft Office.<\/p>\n<p>Friday was free dress \u201csports\u201d day.\u00a0 There was a lot of Niner\u2019s gear on campus.\u00a0 I liked the atmosphere.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what my students had done on Thursday, but they all seemed tired and wiped-out (not unlike the teachers \u2013 that in-service was long and crammed with info \u2013 my brain hurt!).\u00a0 They did not seem to want to learn today, but they were also sleepy.\u00a0 We got through the reading material, and then watched a video on Lewis &amp;
